The year 2016 has been a good one in several areas of sport and record has been broken in many centers in world of sport in the year 2016 alone from the inclusion of the RIO 2016, EURO 2016, TENNIS and many more.

PUNDIT SPORT look back to sporting events that took place around the world  in calendar year of 2016 and brings to you top 10 moment according to our own analysis.



10. REAL MADRID UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNING::....

      The 2016 UEFA champions League final was the final match of the 2015-16 UEFA champions League, the 61st season of Europe's premier club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 24th season since it was renamed from the European Champion Clubs'Cup to Uefa Champions League. The final was played at the San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy, on 28 May 2016 between Spanish teams Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid (A Rivalry Club), in repeat of the 2014 final. It was the second time in the tournament's history that both finalists were from the same city. Real Madrid won 5-3 on a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of the extra time, Real Madrid secure a record extending of 11th Champions League title.


9. NICO ROSBERG's RETIREMENT:......

    Nico Rosberg shocks fans by retiring from Formula-1 only five days after his title win. In what is seen as one of the most surprising moments in the world of sports, Formula-1 champion announced his retirement from the game after winning his first world title by beating Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by finishing second in the final race in Abu Dhabi.
The 2016 off-season  was already set to be interesting with the new-look cars being unveiled early next year, but the intense speculation on who Mercedes will sign to replace the world champion has added to that and more.


8. USA WINING BACK RYDER CUP

    Europe's run of Ryder cup victories was brought to an end as the United State won the trophy for the first time in eight years at Hazeltine National.
Darren Clarke's men came into the contest looking for a fourth win in a row but were on the back foot after a 4-0 whitewash in the opening session and entered the final day trailing 9.5-6.5



7. THE DEATH OF A SPORT ICON 'MUHAMMAD ALI'

    He wasn't a British, but if ever a sportsman transcended nationality, or anything else for that matter, it was Muhammad Ali. His death in June 2016, aged 74, was the final bell for one of the most influential figures in history. He once said: 'IF I WERE A GARBAGE MAN, I'D BE THE WORLD'GREATEST GARBAGE MAN.'      Boxing got very lucky with his career choice.


6. THE ANDY MURRAY'S CAREER YEAR.

    Andy Murray's career year peoples him to the top of the sport. After Novak Djokovic won the first two majors of the year - defeating Murray in both the Australian and French open finals-it seemed almost inconceivable that the Serbian wouldn't finish the year No.1 yet again. But Murray had other ideas. The Scot utterly dominated the tour the second half of the season, winning his second Wimbledon trophy and a singles gold medal in Rio de Janeiro. After supplanting Djokovic in Paris and becoming No.1 for the first time, he cemented his status as the best player on the planet by defeating Novak Djokovic in the ATP Finals title match. Murray finished the season an incredible 78-9 as he ended the year on a 26-match winning streak-and took home nine titles, three of which were Masters. There has officially been a changing of the guard in men's tennis.







5. BRAZIL WINNING FIRST EVER OLYMPIC MEN FOOTBALL GOLD.

    Neymar struck the winning penalty as Brazil claimed a first ever Olympic football gold medal  with victory Germany on penalties at Srio's Maracana. The 5-4 shoot-out win exacted revenge for a humiliating 7-1 World cup semi-final defeat to Germany two years ago.
Olympic gold was the only major title to have escaped five-time world champions Brazil in their history, the Barcelona star Neymar righted that historical wrong as he fired the winning penalty into the top corner before breaking into tears.

In front of the biggest crowd of Rio's  Games, including nine-time Jamaican gold medallist Usain Bolt. Neymar's frst half  lead. In honour of the retiring sprinting great, Neymar even adopted the "lighting bolt"celebration, whilst chants of "ole, ole, ole, Neymar"rang round Rio's most iconic arena.



4.  LEICESTER WINS THE EPL TITLE

     Leicester won the 2015-16 Premier League title in May 2016 after loosing just three matches in the season- 2-looses to Arsenal and 1-lose to Liverpool as they finish the season above second place Arsenal with SEVEN points difference, their first top-level football championship. They are one of only six clubs to have won the Premier League Since its inception in 1992. Several media channel described their title win as the greatest sporting upset ever, or the best football fairy-tale of history. Several betting site had never paid out as such long odds for any sport.



3. MAMELODI SUNDOWNS WINS THEIR FIRST EVER CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE:

    Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa defeated Zamalek of Egypt in a 3-1 agregade in the final to win their first CAF Champions League title in 21 years. They became the first South African team to score 2 goals in each half of CAF Champions Leaue, also the first South African team to defeat Egytian team in  CAF champions League.
The 2016 CAF Champions League was the 52nd edition of Africa's premier club football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the 20th edition under the current CAF champions league format.



2.  RANGERS INTERNATIONAL WON FIRST NPFL AFTER 32 YEARS.

     Rangers International popularly known as Enugu Rangers won their seventh league title and first since 1984. The 2016 Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) is the 45th season of the Nigeria Premier League, the top Nigerian professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1972, and the 26th since rebranding of the league as the 'Professional League.



1. THE WINING OF EURO 2016 TITLE BY PORTUGAL.

    The UEFA Euro 2016 Final was a football match that took place on 10 July 2016 at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, to determine the winners of a UEFA EURO 2016.
Portugal defeated the hosts and two-time winners France by 1-0 after extra time, with a goal from substitute Eder, to claim their first-ever major tournament title. In doing so, Portugal became he tenth nation to win the UEFA European Championship, 12 years after losing their first final at home in 2004. France became the second host team to lose the final, after Portugal in 2004, and suffered their first defeat at a major tournament hosted in the country since the 1960 European Nations' cup third-place  playoff against Czechoslovakia. This was the fifth European Championship final to end in a draw after 90 minutes of play, and the second whose winners were decided by extra time, after the inaugural final in 1960.
As the winners, Portugal gained entry into their first-ever FIFA confederations cup, to be played in Russia in 2017.
