LOL ! NIGERIA LEAGUE CLUBS NICKNAME AND 5 FUNNY NICKNAMES OF NIGERIAN PLAYERS



The Nigeria Professional Premier League NPFL will begin its new season campaign on the 14th of January 2017 with just one match to be played on the opening day between Kano Pillars and Ifeanyi Uba. All other remaining first matches will be played next day as Champions Enugu Rangers will be at home to welcome Abia Warriors.

Here at PUNDIT SPORT, we bring to you some of the club names and their nicknames in addition to five funny nicknames of some footballers in the league.


1.  Abia Warriors................. OCHENDO BABES

** (PLAYER)..... CHISOM CHIKATARA.............(KOLANUT BOY)
Chikatara playing for Abia Warriors since 2012 and has been a very good player to the Ochendo babes side, he explained how he got "Kolanut Boy"as he's popularly known by teammates, he said
"My Mother was a popular Kolanut seller in Umuahia before her death in September 2015.
She was always keen on having me assist her with distributing her goods and never really wanted me to become a footballer. With time, people at the club got to know about the fight between me and my mom over my choice of becoming a footballer and they started calling me 'Kolanut boy'. I can't remember the man that started calling me the name, but I still remember he works for DSTV.


2. Heartland FC .......... NAZI MILLIONAIRES

** (PLAYER) .... IKE IBENEGBU.......... (MOSQUITO)
Ike is one of the funniest player in Nigeria League club for anyone who follows Nigeria League and any Heartland FC Supporter. He explained how he got the nickname 'Mosquito'. He Said:
"The origin of my nickname 'Mosquito'can be traced to my time at Imo state University. I was simply called the name then because of my small stature.
"My course mates and colleagues were marvelled at my footballing skills despite my small frame and many started calling me 'MOSQUITO'. Today, most people don't know my original name, they refer to me as 'MOSQUITO'.


3. Eyimba United ........... PEOPLE'S ELEPHANT.

** (PLAYER)............ DARE OJO............. (ENERGY)
Dare was prolific player for Kwara United that were relegated to the National League and now playing for Eyimba International. He is well known as a strong box-to-box midfielder and sometimes compared to Micheal Essien of Ghana with his style of solid play. He explained how he got the name √ČNERGY'as a popular nickname known by others, he said:
"It was a friend of mine who gave me the nickname during my time with Prime FC. He alongside other supporters of the club were surprised at my power as a footballer.
"I love dominating the midfield and it's always difficult for people to penetrate my position on the field at times. They do as if I'm a holding midfielder or playmaker because the way I move around the midfield of play and score important goals."


4. Rivers United........... PRIDE OF RIVERS

** PLAYER.................AUSTINE FESTUS.......... (KOBOKO / HORSE WHIP)
Festus is one among the best centre-backs in the Nigerian Professional Football League and the Captain for Rivers United and he is known for no-nonsense man. He explain how he got the nickname 'Koboko', he said:
"They[colleagues] started calling me 'KOBOKO'when i sign for Rivers United from Bendel Insurance. I'm a defender who is never afraid of making any opponent. When I joined Rivers, there were a lot of top players in the side, but they were also afraid of me in training because of my approach."

5. Warri Wolves............... SEA SIDERS

** PLAYER.............. OKEMUTE ODAH ....................... (NUMBER 30)
Okemute Odah is a Nigerian goalkeeper and a Warri Wolves goalkeeper, he explained here how he got the nickname 'NUMBER 30'. He said
"Number 30 is synonymous with me. I wore the same number while I was at Sharks and when I chose the same number when I signed for Warri Wolves, my team mates started calling me 'NUMBER 30'.

8. Akwa United ....................... PROMISE KEEPERS

9. Lobi Stars .......................... PRIDE OF BENUE

12. Nasarawa United.............. SOLID MINERS

13. Kano Pillars ................. MAISUGIDA........is an Hausa Language which means House Owners.
