AFCON 2017: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW AHEAD OF THE TOTAL GABON 2017 AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS.


TOTAL GABON 2017 African Cup Of Nations Preview


The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, known as the TOTAL AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS, GABON 2017 is scheduled to be the 31st edition of the African Cup of Nations since it inception in 1957. The tournament which is scheduled to hold in Gabon and kick off on January 14th 2017 in which the champion will qualify for the 2017 FIFA Confederations cup in Russia, event that is also part of the Africa Cup of Nations 60th Anniversary.

In conjunction with CAF and FIFA official, January 2nd has been set for all European clubs to release players to their country who are in participation of the 2017 AFCON tournament, this is made mandatory for all affected clubs.

Sixteen nations are to battle for the title which the final match will be played in Libreville stadium in Gabon on February 5th the final day. The teams are divided in four groups consist of four teams in each.

GROUP-A .... Gabon, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea Bissau

GROUP-B..... Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Zimbabwe

GROUP-C...... Cote d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Morocco, Togo

GROUP-D....... Ghana, Mali, Egypt, Uganda.


Ivory Coast defeated the Black Star of Ghana via penalty in the last edition in 2015 to win the title, and there are only EIGHT countries [ Cameroon, Algeria, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Congo, Morocco, Ghana and Egypt ]  in this tournament that have won the title in past.

Host nation Gabon will stage the opening match in Libreville on Saturday January 14th against Group-A opponent Guinea-Bissau who make their first appearance in the tournament. Cameroon and Burkina Faso are also in same group with the host nation.

The defending champions, Cote d'Ivoire will start their defense of the title they won last in Equitorial Guinea against Togo on Monday 16th of January 2017 and continue their title defense against other opponents Moroccoa and Democratic Republic of Congo who are also in same group.

The northern African, Algeria, have the toughest first round task in Group-B where they must first take on Zimbabwe before Tunisia and later Senegal for one of the two qualifying places for the quater-finals.

The Black Stars of Ghana are the team to beat in Group-D, apart from Uganda, they will take o Egyptians who just make their return to the tournament after six years of non appearance.

Two top teams are to qualify from each group to form eight teams that will contest for the quater-finals scheduled to be played on Saturday 28th of January and Sunday the 29th of January. Four teams will qualify from the quater-final to face each other in the semi-final on Wednesday 1st of February and Thursday 2nd of February.
Semi-finals losers will fight for third place on Saturday 4th of February and the semi-finalist winners will battle in the final for whom to be crowned the 31st edition of the African Cup of Nations tournament on Sunday the 5th of February 2017.
